Haven't written in this thing for a while. Been busy. It's been a wild ride since that night a few months ago— Alexis and I have been… in an awkward place since then. We've really been trying to ignore it and move on, but some nights things just… escalate.
And then we wake up in the morning regretting everything.
I genuinely don't know what to do. I DON'T open myself up to people. Attachment is death in this place. And yet… here I am. Part of me wants to just go separate ways once we get back. Pretend this never happened. Yet I can't stand the thought of never seeing him again. The worst part is, it's abundantly clear he thinks the same about me. I hate this feeling. But I can't stop. The rush of it all feels like cocaine. Except way gayer. Cogayine, if you will.
Kaiser was onto something. I fucking hate bisexuals. We're all hopeless.
Spec throws his notebook to the ground, letting his head crash back against the pillow of his bed. He stares out the adjacent window, watching the perpetual pinkish-purple lighting of Level 201 streak across the sky.
What was he still doing here?
Spec and Alexis had finally made it to the Neon City just over a day ago— and yet here they were, spending a second night. The two had been itching to get back to their lives for months, but it seems neither is quite able to fully let go of everything they built.
Spec sighs, his thoughts racing. "One minute I'm feeling giddy inside— like my energy is overflowing. The next I feel like I'm being drowned in a tar pit, suffocating in pitch black. This can't be normal… can it? Maybe this is just what… no, no. There's no way I'm actually… with him? I can barely even bring myself to think of that word."
Spec pulls the covers over his head, blocking out the light of the outside world. It was nice in here. Nothing to worry about. Just himself and a comfortable bed.
"FUCK." Spec swears mentally. Shifting too fast had led to his prosthetic becoming caught on the bed, the sharp metal edges ripping it open.
So much for a comfortable bed.
Spec grumbles, pulling himself out of the mess of his own making. He throws on a pair of slippers, heading across the hall to knock on Alexis's door. He raps on the flimsy metal hotel door a few times, waiting for a response.
He doesn't have to wait long.
"What do you want, Spec?" Alexis replies, opening the door. He looks no better off himself.
"Can I sleep in here tonight?" Spec asks wearily.
"I'm not really feeling li—"
"Not like that." Spec interjects.
Alexis pauses, before restarting his sentence. "You have a perfectly fine bed across the hall. You can live without me for a few hours."
"That's just the thing… I uh, broke it." Spec holds up his right arm, bits of ripped fluff still stuck in some of the edges of the finger joints.
Alexis groans, opening the door fully. "Fiiineee. Come in, loser."
"My head hurts."
Alexis rolls over onto his side. Another sleepless night was taking its toll on his health.
"Is he awake yet?"
Alexis slips on his glasses as he sits up in bed, glancing down at Spec, still unmoving on the opposite side and lying face down into a pillow.
"God fucking damn it." Alexis slides out of bed, retreating into the bathroom. He locks the door behind him, sitting down in the empty bathtub with his head in his hands.
"Why the hell did it have to be ME? And why HIM? What the fuck am I supposed to do with this now? I can't go back there, that's for sure. Not like this…"
"Why do I have to fail EVERYTHING so spectacularly? He's a fucking hazard, why can't I just accept that? Why can't I just do the right thing? I have to keep myself safe… I won't have a repeat of…"
A knock at the door pierces the dissociative fog clouding Alexis's mind.
"Hey gayboy, you in there?"
"Fuck. Keep your shit together." "Yeah, who the hell else would I be?"
"I don't know, a surprisingly attractive hyper-intelligent skin-stealer? A hallucination? Hurry it up in there, it's been like, thirty minutes. It's my turn now."
"Why not just come in anyway? It's not like I'll be seeing anything I haven't seen already." "Why. WHY? Every word that comes out of my mouth hurts more than the last. No. No. Stop it. Focus. He's just another—"
"ALEXIS!"
