Our hero sees itself stranded at sea.

In the tides of the ocean blue, cradled with all the care dedicated to a newborn babe, it is swept away as effortlessly as a love poem in a bottle. Like the birth of Venus, an accompaniment of molten, giggling faces heralds its arrival. The evening finds it stranded on an empty beach.

It descends into the ruins of a once-perfect world. Our hero finds its bearings in an unfamiliar environment, overlaid with a pale grid around the tattered edges. In the distance, it sees a stunning sunset, the distressingly maddening marvel of this world, who peers straight back down at them.

"What are you?" asks the fantasist.

The sun laughs, and it caresses their ear like the sizzling of an ill-tuned radio. Or the hiss of raw meat on a backyard grill.

"i am nothing," she claims, "but i am everything."

Her voice cuts through the geometry like the sound of eggs on a midsummer pavement. Or a practiced flick of the remote to an idle channel.

"I don't understand," retorts the fantasist as it drags its avatar out of the water, leaving a bloody trail in its wake. It does not seem to notice the way the wind tears at its hair and clothes like paper.

There is nothing to understand, the dusk almost says, but retracts her statement with the backspace button to which she alone is privy.

The palms above tremble, "i am the first spark of comprehension; i am the numbing of the senses. i am an epiphany for the ages; i am the shackle of tradition. i am a madman's malady; i, their abyss and their savior. i am a nothing assigned meaning; i am an everything given shape."

"i am meaning," concludes the fiery cloud of gas smugly. The fantasist appears far from impressed.

"There is no meaning to this," they bite viciously. "Give me reality."

"there is no reality, darling," dismisses their opposition. "what do you see?"

The fantasist pauses and glances down.

Through their fingers slips fine, glistering-white sand. Like cascading digits, they swim, flickering in and out of existence. Sharp lashes prickle at the seams of their skin, and River stares.

"I see—"

The beholder smiles with teeth.
