An instance of a Pixie Gun on display at "The A.River Collection" on Level 216

Description

Object 71, better known as "Pixie Guns" are volatile objects resembling firearms that are found uncommonly throughout a majority of indoor levels in the Backrooms, such as offices, skyscrapers, and schools. Unlike Organiguns which can resemble a wide variety of firearms, Pixie Guns only take the form of 1 firearm model, that being the Gyrojet MkII1.

Unlike normal firearms, however, these guns are exceptionally destructive when fired. Their bullets are incredibly explosive, containing approximately the same energy as 2 sticks of dynamite per bullet. Research has shown that Pixie Guns fire using a mix of Firesalt and gunpowder along with an unidentified substance known as "Pixie Dust.". It is a golden glitter-like powder that emits a dim glow. It's theorized that the powder is the reason for the destructive properties of Pixie Guns, as Pixie Dust is extremely reactive, exploding almost immediately once exposed to open air.

A Pixie Gun can fire 10 shots before it runs out of ammo, after which, it will be unusable for 5 weeks before anomalously reloading back. However, if one fires a Pixie Gun once, the gun is unable to be used until after 5 minutes. All attempts to fire the gun during this timeframe will result in empty shots.

Dangers

Pixie Guns, while having very destructive ammo, are unreliable at destroying specific or moving targets. This is due to the bullets' trajectory being very inaccurate, caused by a design flaw inherent in every instance of the object that created asymmetrical thrust towards the ammo. This has caused many accidents in which Pixie Guns were unable to fire at their desired target.

Another risk for using Pixie Guns are their tendency to explode upon being fired. When used, Pixie Guns have a chance to explode, creating a blast with similar energy to 2 sticks of dynamite, immediately killing the user. The chance is random and completely unpredictable. This is hypothesized to be due to the extreme reactivity of Pixie Dust.

History

Initial manifestation of Pixie Guns was estimated to be during the year 1968, around the same time in which Gyrojets were produced and sold back in the Frontrooms. Liminal Echo was hypothesized to be the cause of this, as there were no records of any objects resembling Pixie Guns that manifested before that year.

Before the formation of the Leaders in the year 1970, there were almost no reported usages of the object. One of the only reliable reports of Pixie Gun usage back then was by the well known Slam City Administrative Council2. While initially there was a proposal of using the object as a weapon of self-defense should the city come into attack from external forces, the dangers of using the object proved too high for the Council to accept the proposal.

Most of the early data gathered from the object came from several collaborative research efforts between the I.M.B.H. and S.C.A.S. in section OX-03, nicknamed “Mechanized” in Slam City as well as the Charles Darwin Research Center in Level 11. The research efforts were meant to not only figure out the anomalous refueling capabilities of the Pixie Guns, they were also meant to identify the chemical composition of Pixie Dust, as well as how to reproduce and neutralize it. Due to the high casualties caused by the volatile properties of Pixie Dust however, the project was quickly called off in 1973, with the S.C.A.S. calling it "an impossible attempt to tame a wild beast".

Several years after their establishment, the Leaders took an interest towards Pixie Guns. Due to their high destructive capabilities, it is most likely that they sought to use them in an attempt to gain a significant advantage over other existing groups of interest. Despite knowing the prior risks involved, the Leaders were courageous enough to conduct in depth research on the gun. While most knowledge uncovered by them was unfortunately later destroyed during the dismantlement of the Leaders, their extensive research is something that cannot be doubted, as uncovered papers have revealed that the Leaders have successfully disabled the tendency of these Pixie Guns to explode upon firing as well as their inaccuracy issues3. Documents have suggested that the Leaders have used the gun to cause mass destruction against certain dangerous entities, including Clumps and Deathmoths, as well as altering the terrain of several levels to make them more suitable for habitation.

Another major civilization that took interest towards Pixie Guns was Emstable. Similarly to the Leaders, it is most likely that Emstable sought to have possession of these guns to gain an advantage over already existing groups of interest at the time. Other than conducting research on the gun however, evidence was found that Emstable used Pixie Guns for resource collection, particularly in concrete mining. Emstable is also assumed to have used the guns as a deterrent or as intimidation to prevent other groups from approaching them at some point, given their isolationist policies back then.

During the war between Emstable and the Leaders, several reports found from both parties during the war have also indicated usage of Pixie Guns. While their exact role in the war is still unknown, there can be little doubt that they played an incredibly destructive part of it given their highly destructive capabilities. It is also presumed that after the war, the Leaders confiscated nearly all Emstable research on the gun for themselves.

While no evidence was provided, it was also presumed that the object played a very important role during the dismantlement of the Leaders, as such a powerful weapon would most likely have not escaped their notice. Multiple structures and bases at the time were structurally vulnerable to explosions that Pixie Guns were capable of.

The Ariane Circle, one year after their establishment in 1998, conducted research on Pixie Guns as well, though not to the extent that the Leaders and Emstable had done before them. Both the S.C.A.S. and the I.M.B.H. also gave the Circle most of their knowledge regarding the object after a trade deal in 2001. Despite their best efforts however, the high causalities that resulted from experimentation of the gun caused all efforts of the project to be cancelled a year later.

No knowledge of usages of the gun were found until the year after the establishment of the M.E.G., where it was used as defense for less fortified bases, given their highly explosive properties. Proper research of the gun conducted by the M.E.G. did not begin until 2014, after the discovery of Level 8 and The Snackrooms. After a massive accident that occurred in Level 3 which nearly resulted in conflict with the EoA however, all research done towards Pixie Guns was halted.

Later, Pixie Guns were used during the early phase in the conflict against the Church of the Veiled in both Levels 6 and 8. They served as a somewhat effective albeit risky tool in destroying barriers put in place by them as well as being able to destroy most creatures spawned by the Veiled with ease. However, the sheer causality counts that have resulted from usage of the gun have caused the Oversight Council to immediately forbid all usage of the weapon, using Firesalt to fulfill it's niche instead.

An infamous usage and the last major usage of the gun was during the infamous FOJ bomb attack in Level 11, where several teams of the group were sent out to cause as much destruction as possible, using any explosives they had at their disposal. Pixie Guns were considered to be one of the biggest contributors in terms of total destruction in the attack, as they were used to attack established structures, heavily damaging the headquarters of several major groups of interest in the level as a result4. The damage caused by them was so severe that a treaty involving nearly all major groups was signed that completely restricted usage of the object. A notice was also made by the M.E.G. that requested handing instances of Pixie Guns to them for dismantlement in exchange for a bounty.

As a result of the treaty, no other major groups of interest have tried tampering or experimenting with the gun. Attempts were made, but all gave up in the end. While there is undeniably a black market catered to these guns, no large scale modification or research projects have been conducted since.
