Description

Object 64, commonly known as “Whisperers”, are one-way wireless audio systems. Resembling the audio guides frequently used in the Frontrooms during walking tours, they can be found in a majority of interior levels and environments.

Missing alt text.

An instance of Object 64 found in Level 5.

Object 64 is most widely known for the audios specimens emanate. Frequently in English1, these audios depict wanderers exploring undocumented areas of the Backrooms. Whether they are genuine or fabricated by Liminal Echo is still subject to debate, as all stated names in reports do not match any of the G.P.D.’s records, and none of the victims’ bodies have been recovered. Object 64’s lack of communicative ability makes it incredibly difficult to collect information on the matter.

The content within the audios emanating from Object 64 is mundane at first, the subject often describing their surroundings to anyone listening, sharing stories from their prior life, etc. However, despite the calm nature at the start of these audios, they will escalate rather quickly. Screams, cries for help, and graphic sounds soon follow the once-tranquil monologue, often conveying the demise of the subject.2 Because of this sudden shift, listening to the audios emitted by manifestations of Object 64 is often disorienting to wanderers and is ill-advised without standard training. Common effects of listening to the audios emitted by Object 64 include, but are not limited to:

  • Nausea
  • Extreme feelings of guilt and regret
  • Panic and/or severe paranoia
  • Difficulty breathing
  • The development of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder or other similar diagnoses3
  • Urges to locate and assist the subject of the audios4

Appearance

Instances of Object 64 are often characterized by a bright red lanyard and an attached singular earphone. Most cases of Object 64 will show notable age, possibly even scratches or dents on the object’s exterior. Despite this, there have been no dysfunctional instances of Object 64 reported, though excessive static and difficulty in understanding the emitted language are not uncommon.

Utilities

Unfortunately, the only recovered instances of Object 64 are audio receivers, eliminating any possibility of using them for communication or audio entertainment. However, they served as an instrumental component in the Kalag Institute’s archival of human deaths for a short while. The M.E.G. engaged in trade with the Institute, exchanging reports, and in some cases the receivers themselves, for increased access to the Institute’s private archive and other valuable data.

While we’re able to keep track of quite a bit, there’s a nonzero amount of deaths that slip through the cracks of our research. Whether it be Backrooms oddities or entities getting to them before we can, we aren’t perfect with our investigations. Object 64 has helped us significantly in documenting those who have lost their lives here.
Isagani Mercado, Senior Archivist of the Kalag Institute’s Backrooms Branch

However, this symbiotic relationship did not last long, as the debates regarding the credibility of the information provided by Object 64 quickly halted the trade between the two parties.

Do’s and Don’ts

The M.E.G. has developed a unique protocol for reporting and safely navigating instances of Object 64, known as R.E.L.I.C.

N O T I C E

Due to the recent rise in missing person cases as a result of Object 64, we are implementing a new method for safely collecting specimens for containment. Please abide by the following steps if you find a specimen of Object 64:

R - Recognize

Using the description above, confirm that the item is indeed an instance of Object 64.

E - Examine

Observe your surroundings so that you may describe the location of the object accurately. It is preferable that you write these observations down so that they remain intact. These may assist the M.E.G. in recognizing any potential patterns in the occurrences of the object.

L - Leave Behind

Please resist any temptation to interact with the object, and leave it behind as you locate the nearest M.E.G. outpost.

I - Inform

Inform an M.E.G. Operative of the object sighting and describe the location it was found in.

C - Carry On

Go on with your day and leave the rest to the M.E.G. We will take care of it.

We thank you for your compliance, and wish you the best of luck during these difficult times. Remember, heroism is a fruitless endeavor. These items are attempting to deceive you and take advantage of your empathy. Let the fate of those lost serve as a warning: inaction is peace.

M.E.G. - Bettering Humanity

They’re wrong. They’re wrong about all of this.

Those people in the audios, they’re human. They’re real people. We found one of them, someone named Stephen Campbell. Juanita found his body in a tucked-away corner of Level 800 during an investigation, along with a damaged tape recorder. I think that’ll give you a good enough theory on how this object works.

I know that I’m not really one to get involved in things like this, and this will likely be swept under the rug, but I don’t want these people to just be left behind. The M.E.G. tells people to report these items and says that they’ll take care of it, but walang bayag to actually do anything. These people, they have families, friends, people that care about them. If the M.E.G. is going to back off from their promise to protect all wanderers in the Backrooms, the least they could do is give their loved ones closure.
