Alexis awakens with a jolt, gasping for air. The past 24 hours had left him in an anxious daze as he drifted in and out of dissociation. Such things to be expected after a breakup like this…

"Breakup? That implies we were together in the first place… and he CLEARLY doesn't see it that way…"

He turns over in bed, pulling the sheets close as he squeezes the pillow next to him.

"Why didn't I just come clean with him? I could have saved both of us so much mental strain…"

"Who am I kidding? This was doomed to fail from the start."

Alexis's eyes drift to his nightstand—the black and red U.E.C. ID demanding his attention like a cancerous sore. The sight makes him want to vomit.

"Especially considering the start in question."

He rolls over, making himself small as he pulls the sheets tightly around. Perhaps if he stays here like this, all of these problems will go away. Perhaps this is all just a bad dream.

The incessant buzzing of a phone call shatters his mental fog. Alexis grabs frenetically at his bedside table, managing to snag the edge of the loathsome device with the tips of his fingers.

*beep*

"Hello?"

"Alexis. It's been five months. WHERE THE HELL ARE YOU?"

Alexis flops face-first into his pillow and groans. His U.E.C. Supervisor was the last person he wanted to speak with right now. He sighs, rolling back over.

"Listen, Chief Kozioł—this past day has been a bit…"

Alexis's voice trails off as he surveys his all but wrecked bedroom.

"A bit what now?"

"A bit messy. Could you cut me some slack? It isn't like you gave me the easiest task in the world, yknow."

"…"

The voice on the end of the phone goes silent for a few moments. Slight static crackles through the phone speakers as Alexis slowly grows more and more uncomfortable.

"What?"

"See, that's just it—we wanted to bring you in for a little bit of training. We wanted to give you some time to adjust after making your return to 11, but you're starting to wear out our kindness."

Alexis sighs, sitting upright as he fumbles with his glasses.

"Yeah, I understand. There were a few things I needed to discuss with you anyway. Where am I headed?"

"Just make your way to the Thebes district. I understand that's only a short walk from your residence."

"Yup. Thanks. See you then."

Alexis faceplants into his pillow. His head was killing him—bursting with a torrent of thoughts still fresh in his mind from last night. Not knowing how much time has passed since he last left his bed, Alexis gathers what little strength he has into his fist, practically ripping himself out of bed—understanding that if he didn't, he'd never leave.

Alexis shakily drags himself into the bathroom, nearly falling a handful of times. He practically puts half of his weight onto the sink when he arrives. He doesn't bother with the lights—the sudden brightness would be the nail in the coffin in terms of making him collapse. Alexis turns on the shower at the maximum temperature, letting his mind drift into a foggy haze as steam quickly fills the small room. "Might as well get cleaned up. I have to start somewhere, no?"

With that thought, he shuts and locks the door.
