Description

Sepia image picturing a foggy alley between old buildings, with shadowy, human-like figures floating motionless in the sky.

They await redemption.

Limbus St. is peaceful.1 It exists in a different plane, separate from the complex matrix that composes the Backrooms — far from the frantic chaos that rules it.

Damp Steps

In terms of its structure and layout, this level is deceptively simple. Upon arrival, wanderers will find themselves standing on a wide cobblestone street, submerged ankle-deep in crystal clear water.2 The water is ice-cold and still, with no discernible source. It never rains, and the shallow canal flows nowhere, allowing for the smooth reflection of the bright, foggy sky. These mists overhead are so dense that they completely shroud the source of the level's light,3 eliminating any sense of direction and passage of time.

Forbidden Premises

The street is bordered on both sides by old warehouses with red-brick facades. Each building is five or six stories high and has no doors or any other alternative entrances, even the windows have withstood all attempts to break in.4 Although the mists initially make the rows of structures seem endless, walking far enough in either direction will gradually increase the fog's density until it becomes an impenetrable wall and making further movement becomes impossible — marking the end of the level.

Hardly any of the warehouses can be distinguished from one another, and when they can, it is only due to the plaques or signs that sometimes adorn their fronts and identify them as "establishments" of note. These signs often present names that seem to reference other known locations, such as the "Hotel Virginia" or the "Local Backrooms Cemetery," but also occasionally mention places that no one recognizes, like "The Confluence of Pain and Torment and Devastation and Ruin."5

Dubious Company

Every so often, light temporarily emanates from the windows of certain select buildings, but during these events no shadows of movement are ever cast. No figures appear, no signs of life emerge, and the lights are extinguished as suddenly and inexplicably as they were turned on. Whispers and faint laments that seem to come out of nowhere are also not uncommon to hear, but are best ignored.6 Yet, despite these occurrences that seem to imply otherwise, no wanderers are known to inhabit this level.7

The presence of entities is, however, impossible to overlook — their cold indifference palpable across Limbus St. "Shades" is the name given to the vaguely humanoid shapes composed of dense black smoke that float around 20 meters above the street. They are the only form of native "life"8 present in the level.

Shades never move and are unresponsive to their surroundings or any deliberate attempt to get their attention.9 The only thing that distinguishes them from stationary ornaments hanging in the hazy sky is that, at random intervals, a Shade may begin to fade away until it disappears completely. Correspondingly, new Shades emerge at about the same rate at which they disappear. But contrary to their lingering death, the "birth" of a Shade is more blunt, as they simply manifest themselves abruptly in one of the vacant spaces up in the sky.10

Entrances and Exits

None of those who have found themselves on this level recall how they got there. The only known account describes someone suddenly finding themselves on the level, with no memory of where they were or what they were doing just moments before.11 This makes establishing theories or possible escape routes from Limbus St. difficult, but the efforts are still ongoa
