Description
Level 827 is a stretch of beach that is surrounded on both sides by a seemingly endless ocean. This beach is 30 meters (100 ft) wide from ocean to ocean but stretches forever lengthwise. The most distinctive feature of this level is the countless number of beds that lie in the middle of the beach. These beds all have an identical metal frame, a white fitted sheet, and a white pillow. However, each bed notably has a different colored cover. These beds have properties that can range from benign to lethal and therefore it is recommended to be informed before resting in one.
Tale of a Dreamer
The Dreamer walks between the innumerable beds pondering their situation. Questions race through their mind. What is this place? How did I get here? Why are there so many beds? The Dreamer walks until they can no longer continue without rest. Luckily for them there are ample options for places to rest. Blue was always their favorite color, a blue bed will do the trick.
The Dreamer lies in a blue bed, sleep taking them instantly. They wake up in a warm bed, the red cover keeping them warm. They're not in the bed they fell asleep in; this must be a dream. Looking around, the room they are in is exactly like their bedroom back home. As they take in their surroundings, a door to their left swings open.
“Good morning dear. I hope you slept well!” Katie exclaims with beaming exuberance.
The Dreamer knows this is a fabrication and responds mournfully, “You… you aren’t real. You’re just a figment of this dream.”
Katie looks confused and saddened but regains her sunny disposition.
“Oh dear, are you feeling ok? I think you need a good breakfast to clear your head.” She then places a tray with a full breakfast spread on the Dreamer’s lap. “Just eat up and come talk to me,” She says as she leaves the room.
The Dreamer, still slightly stunned by seeing Katie, exclaims, “I’m fine… you’re just…”
The Dreamer is left alone with a delicious breakfast in front of them. They know this is all fake, but they have not eaten a good meal in some time and begin to eat. The pancakes and syrup taste a bit sweeter, the sausage tastes a bit more savory, and the orange juice is more refreshing. The Dreamer is fuller than they ever have been in this place. It feels good.
The Dreamer gets out of bed and walks through an all too familiar house. Every detail is exactly as they remember it: a wine stain next to a cabinet, a scuff on a door from furniture being moved, pictures of them and Katie. They know that this is not real, it's all a dream that they will wake up from at any moment. The Dreamer eventually finds Katie lounging in the living room.
“Good morning, how was breakfast?” Katie asks in her ever cheery manner.
“It was good… not that it matters. I’ll wake up hungry and you’ll be gone,” The Dreamer sits on the opposite end of the couch from Katie, not even looking in her direction.
Katie sidles up to the Dreamer and puts her head on their shoulder. She stays there for a tender moment before piping up, “I don’t know what has gotten into you, but whatever it is, I am there for you and I love you.”
The Dreamer, barely forcing down tears before, starts sobbing and weakly chokes out a response, “I… I’ll never forget you Katie… I love you so much…”
The Beds
Level 827’s most interesting aspect are the countless beds, which all have unique effects based upon the color of the bed’s cover. The following colors have been found and their effects have been listed below:
Blue: While the full effects of this bed is unclear, it is broadly believed that this bed induces a dream-like state that is positive for the person sleeping. Evidence for this theory has been gathered through observation of those affected. Usually, the sleeper has subtle tics, such as smiling and a lack of movement, that indicate a pleasant experience. While these effects sound positive, this state is permanent once it has started. Those within this state no longer need to undergo bodily functions, as they are alive despite not eating or drinking for a prolonged period of time. Moving one of these dreamers from the bed does not reverse the effect; therefore it is recommended to leave them where they are.
Red: When one sleeps in a red bed they will wake up in Level 127, Level 141, Level 187, Level 368, Level 440, Level 854, or Level 966. While this is a means to escape this level, it is not recommended to sleep in a red bed due to the danger of the levels. From an observer’s standpoint, the person sleeping in a red bed will disappear after 8 hours.
Purple: The effects of this bed on its occupants is entirely unknown, as any person who has fallen asleep in this bed has disappeared and never been found.
Green: This bed is a violent death for those that decide to sleep in it. As soon as one falls asleep in this bed, their body dissolves into in a matter of seconds.
Yellow: When one sleeps in a yellow bed, they will wake up in Level 48, Level 72, Level 100, Level 134, Level 149, Level 201, Level 303, Level 436, Level 994, or, strangely, Level 827. This bed is the recommended method for leaving this level, as the levels that this bed sends one to are by and large safe. From an observer’s standpoint, the person sleeping in a yellow bed will disappear after 12 hours.
Orange: When one sleeps in this bed, they will wake up in another orange bed in the level. The bed that one wakes up in seems to be entirely random. From an observer’s standpoint, the person sleeping will disappear as soon as they fall asleep.
White: This bed seems to be entirely mundane. Those that have slept in them have reported normal sleep with no anomalies.
Black: While the full effects of this bed are unclear, it is broadly believed that this bed induces a nightmare-like state that is negative for the person sleeping. Evidence for this is quite conclusive, as those in this state have been seen grimacing, sweating, and turning violently. Unfortunately for those that have fallen victim to this bed, the effects are permanent. Those in this state do not undergo bodily functions and remain in their nightmarish state indefinitely. Additionally, moving one of these sleepers from the bed does not reverse the effect and as such it is recommended to leave these unfortunate wanderers alone. However, for those with strong will and sympathy, it is possible to put these poor souls out of their misery.
Tale of The Afflicted
The Afflicted walks down the silent beach, reminiscing on his time here. This horrid hellscape has ruined his life. He knows that he will never see his family again, never see his daughter grow up, never fall asleep next to his wife. The Afflicted is weary from the walking they have already done and looks at the numerous beds before them. They decide to sleep in a black bed; it was the color of their bed sheets back home.
The Afflicted finds sleep instantly but soon finds himself in a dark room. The room around him is cold and expansive. Looking around, he sees tables made of wood that stretch into darkness. Next to each table is a bench that one can sit on. The Afflicted is confused and afraid, but he soon smells something pleasant from a nearby table. He looks for the source of the smell and finds a slice of pizza on a plastic tray. He finds this quite suspicious, but he hasn't had good food in so long.
The Afflicted sits down to enjoy his meal and takes a bite of the pizza. As soon as he does this, one of his teeth shatters and blood erupts from the root. He holds his mouth to stop the bleeding but soon feels something else within his mouth, more teeth violently projecting from an unknown source. He feels teeth grinding against his throat and mouth, vomited onto the table and floor. At points the teeth stop, but soon more materialize, they feel almost innumerable. The teeth just keep coming and coming. They begin to wear down the soft tissue in the Afflicted's mouth, leaving cuts and sores in their wake. The teeth begin to be so numerous that the Afflicted has to wade through them like a sea of calcified horror. Eventually, the teeth stop and a mixture of teeth and blood lines the floor. The Afflicted is completely exhausted and distraught. He curls up into a ball and sobs into his hands, unable to comprehend what just happened.
The Afflicted looks up and sees a drab hallway. Something is after him. He has to run. The Afflicted gets up and runs as fast as he can. He runs and runs but it feels like he is moving through water. The hallway looks exactly the same throughout and he is still being pursued, he has to keep going. Eventually, he comes upon a door and immediately rushes through it. Around him is a hazy landscape that he can sparsely comprehend. The only thing that can be made out is a car on an open road.
The Afflicted is exhausted from running but doesn’t trust this car. But his mistrust is quickly overtaken by an urge to drive. He feels as if it is the only way out. After a brief deliberation, he enters the car. The interior is familiar, is this his car? As he looks around, he hears a voice from the passenger seat.
“Are you ok? You look exhausted all of the sudden," Laura says in a concerned demeanor, as she searches the Afflicted's face for any sign of distress.
The Afflicted looks in that direction as if he had heard a ghost and sees his beautiful wife sitting in the passenger seat. He is completely speechless, unable to muster a word.
“Hello? You gonna talk to me or just stare?” Laura says with a growing worry. She then looks back and checks on Sasha, who is fast asleep in her car seat.
The Afflicted finally realizes what is going on and barely is able to muster a response, “Please… no… not them…”
Psychological Effects
Despite Level 827’s relative safety, it imparts a psychological (and physiological) effect that can be potentially lethal if certain precautions are not taken. This effect confers extreme insomnia on any person within the level. This insomnia is so strong that one cannot sleep no matter how tired they are. However, this effect is suppressed in any bed within the level. To the contrary, sleep is found much easier in the beds. Given this, it is recommended that one find a safe bed to abate the negative effects of sleep deprivation.
Tale of The Insomniac
The Insomniac looks to his compatriot wondering when she is going to decide to bed down. “We gonna get some rest soon or are we gonna walk all day?”
Jess looks back with incredulity and barks, “Quit your whining, we need to make sure there are no entities around ready to rip our throats out. We also need to confirm if this level is habitable for the good of humanity. You and I both want that, don’t we? Both for humanity’s sake and for our own well being; the higher ups would be very pleased to be in control of another level.”
The Insomniac considers Jess’ words, a true U.E.C. woman through and through. He knows she is right. This could be a big opportunity for them. Nevertheless, he responds, “You’re right, but I know you’re tired too. We should just rest and then look for an exit when we wake up.”
Jess relents, “Fine, it seems safe enough. You take first watch and I’ll take second.” Jess then goes over to a green bed to lie down.
The Insomniac groans, knowing not to argue with her. He starts looking around but a minute later he notices Jess starting to dissolve. He sees her skin burning and sloughing off, her muscles sizzling into liquid, and her bones dissolving into nothingness. The Insomniac drops to his knees, covering his mouth with his hands as tears well in his eyes. He involuntarily blurts out, “Jess… what the fuck… what the fuck…”
The Insomniac, still in shock, argues with himself, “Why did I tell her to stop? Why did you get in that fucking bed Jess, you should have fucking known better goddammit!” He looks around knowing he needs to find an exit soon. These beds are a deathtrap and he wants to get away from them as soon as possible.
The Insomniac continues to walk for a few hours, getting more tired as he goes. He realizes he needs to sleep but is not going anywhere near those beds. Eventually, he lies on the sandy beach and closes his eyes. He sits there for minutes, feeling the sand beneath his body. The minutes turn into an hour. He opens his eyes and gets back up. He still feels just as tired and questions why he couldn’t get any sleep. He thinks that it was due to seeing what happened to Jess, that would keep anyone up. He just needs to keep going, find an exit, and get some sleep.
The Insomniac walks for several more hours, he is beginning to question how long it has been. He can feel his whole body aching and his legs have lost nearly all feeling. He knows that he can’t continue like this and lies down on the sandy beach once more. He closes his eyes, waiting for sleep to take him. But sleep doesn't come. He lies there for hours, his body aching with exhaustion. The Insomniac mutters to himself, “Why… what’s wrong with me… just fall asleep…”
The Insomniac eventually gets up, he knows that he needs to find an exit soon. His whole body is screaming as he walks. Only an hour later his body simply gives out and he collapses on the ground. The Insomniac closes his eyes.
Bases, Outposts, and Communities
Level 827 has no bases, outposts, or communities due to the psychological effects and lack of resources.
Entrances and Exits
Entrances
Entrances to Level 827 are rare but can be in a multitude of levels. Yellow beds can be found in any level that has a beach. Sleeping in this bed will result in one waking up on the shores of Level 827. If more than one person sleeps in these beds, any occupants will appear next to each other in the level.
Alternatively, an entrance in Level 221 can be found. This entrance looks exactly like Level 827 and is found seamlessly integrated with the dream-like state of the level. If one is not careful, they can find themselves accidentally entering Level 827.
Exits
To exit Level 827, one must sleep in a yellow bed or a red bed. A yellow bed will send one to Level 48, Level 72, Level 100, Level 134, Level 149, Level 201, Level 303, Level 436, or Level 994 (discounting the chance to be sent to Level 827). A red bed will send one to Level 127, Level 141, Level 187, Level 368, Level 440, Level 854, or Level 966. Of the two options, the yellow bed is highly recommended.
