Phenomenon 51 references a species of anomalous, aerial anglerfish, colloquially known as the Angel'er Fish.

Single instance of Entity 51.

Biology:

Observation of Entity 51 instances can be complicated due to their location and are typically studied through drone photographs and video. There are three main attributes that separate Entity 51 from its non-anomalous counterpart:

Size:

The average Entity 51 specimen's length ranges between 60 and 70 meters, with smaller, presumably juvenile, instances measuring approximately 15 to 25 meters. This size is inflated to approximately 100 meters when including its respiratory deviations.

Respiratory:

Entity 51 has a unique respiratory system, operating in a manner not previously observed. Unlike most fish, these entities inhale through their mouths, filling a large flesh sac located on their rear dorsal area. This sac is capable of holding approximately 30-40 m³ of air and is theorized to be its secondary form of locomotion. The presence of gills on Entity 51 instances has been theorized to either be vestigial or serve another purpose entirely¹.

Predatory Adaptations:

The final and most complicated deviation comes in the form of Entity 51's illicium, more noticeably, its esca². As documented in Phenomenon PD-51, these esca operate in a unique way and display various anomalous properties that are not fully understood³. Hypotheses postulate that these changes have developed as a way to lure prey in areas typically not associated with predatory, deep-sea fish.

Behavior:

Habitat:

Entity 51 has only been recorded existing in the atmosphere of applicable levels⁴, none of which held a body of water with enough depth for an anglerfish population. The entity's lure is the only part of its physical body that has been seen below the troposphere. It is currently unknown if Entity 51 has a level of origin or if it is a purely migratory species. The leading theories postulate the existence of a space between levels, which Entity 51 is using as a means of inter-level travel and as breeding grounds⁵.

Migration:

Recently, explorers tasked with investigating Entity 51 have been equipped with a specialized recording device with the capability of being tracked through levels⁶, in an attempt to gain more information on these entities and their migratory patterns. This has had various levels of success in the 3 4 cases it has been deployed.

Predetory Behavior:

An individual Entity 51 instance, appears to feed on a semi-daily basis, depending on the success of its hunt. The following is an example of a typical Entity 51 encounter⁷:

• The entity will lower its esca through the troposphere and towards a destination suitable for its disguise⁸.

• Over a period of 12-24 hours, the esca will remain in the location in an attempt to lure humans to itself. After this time, if no human is captured, the entity will noclip from the level and into a different level of similar composition.

• If a human is successfully lured by the instance, they will be compelled to make contact.

• If contact is made, the esca recoils upwards towards the main body at an accelerated velocity⁹. Despite the speed at which it occurs, the esca does not lose hold of the victim.

• The lure will breach the troposphere and approach the mouth of the entity.

• The victim is consumed, whole, and is plunged into the entity's digestive system.

• The Entity 51 instance will clip from the level and enter an unknown area¹⁰.

• After a 12-hour digestive period, the entity will excrete the unused remains ████ ███ ██████████.

• Approximately 8-10 hours following an excretion, the entity will re-enter the level, or a level of similar composition, and begin the process again.

The hunting tactics used by Entity 51 instances display a semi-complex understanding of human psychology and habits, not previously displayed by similar species.

Esca Retrieval Report

Entity 51 esca, removed from illicium.

On January 17th, Team "Ahab" was dispatched to respond to a potential Entity 51 sighting near Outpost 9. Their intent was to remove the esca and transport it back for research purposes. Immediately upon being severed, the esca was reported to scream and plead as its shape began to warp drastically. Minutes following full detachment, the lure ceased all vocalizations, though it remained in a continuous state of physical flux. The Entity 51 instance immediately vacated the level upon its esca being severed. Approximately five minutes after the entity left the level, the esca is theorized to have activated some form of biological self-defense mechanism. The tissue structures began to rapidly undergo cytolysis as the cells began to diffuse and separate. Several samples were able to be returned to Outpost 9 for study, leading to a significant breakthrough in regards to Entity 51.

When analyzed, the fluid within the esca contained numerous irregular substances that were discovered among the cells and structures typically found within the organelle. Stem cells of a variety of organisms¹¹, were discovered along with a myriad of other non-organic elements.

Most notable among the deviations found within the esca, was the size and complexity of the symbiotic bacteria typically found in non-anomalous anglerfish species. The bacteria present within the esca of Entity 51 instances have evolved into multicellular complex organisms with rudimentary, yet similar, brain structures to small primates. Due to the electromagnetic signals released from these organisms, it is theorized that they are responsible for most, if not all, of the esca's anomalous properties. Given their volatile nature during cytolysis, limited research was able to be performed.

These discoveries led to the hypothesis that Entity 51's esca can disguise itself as a wide variety of different organisms and/or inorganic objects. This theory recontextualizes numerous cases of disappearances as potential Entity 51 hunting incidents. Further research into the entity and its behavior is still ongoing.
