The plot progresses smoothly, with hardly any superfluous information. I was able to read through the entire article with keen interest.
The simple emotions of dog are very appealing; and in terms of how the change in both sides is portrayed, I much prefer being allowed to read into it myself than having it spelled out for me.
My only relief is the slowing of your sobs, like the last few whirs of the engine as your car parks into the driveway.
This metaphor is good, hinting at the owner's condition through its use.
But with it, your petting stops too. I don't understand.
But I understand. The contrast in understanding between the character and the reader deeply moves me.
I really like this article, please accept my sincere upvote.

I really like this story, I just don’t really get how this relates to the canon.
this is late but the dog and the human turn into a hound and a faceling because of desolation. so that's how it links to the canon
You promised you'd take me there again some day… but you never did.
I dislike the sentence structure and writing style you use here. Sentences are very rushed, with too many commas for my taste in what's supposed to be a heartfelt piece. There's also some minor SPaG. I think you could've made the tone more personal to emphasize the dog's personification. The concept is alright, albeit a bit short and stunted compared to what you could accomplish, but it's a bit rough around the edges in execution.
+1. Legend has it they can still be found today, as a hound and faceling.
