Perfect example of what a classicon entry should be. Simple, but not losing detail in favor of said simplicity. Images are fire.

I know I said I wasn’t reading any more entries bc it would just be unfair and likely a mass downvote due to my usual taste… but I made one exception. I want to read something aside from Niku’s usual masterpiece just so I can get a better picture of the con, bc I’m writing my own “entry” for Classicon, (complete with a rant about my thoughts on classic entries that explains my unusual standards and stuff.) and ngl, this proved the entire point I’m trying to make with that post. I understand this tries to replicate the old but it only understands what happened in a surface level. It tries to be “high quality.” But really only proceeds to overdescribe a bland environment with nothing attention grabbing about it. It is exactly what would be expected from a department store in the backrooms with like 1k words worth of meaningless fluff. The classics only worked because of the time they were released in, and the fact they were low quality. Even then, they suck to read in the modern day. This just feels like that but with polish that just removes the charm of that era. I don’t believe we should be replicating the old era at all but I’m saving the why for my entry. This is just a very unfortunate product of a poorly themed contest, that let’s remember, was suggested by a kinda shitty person. I’m sorry you have to be caught in the middle of this my dude but I just don’t like the article. I might still check out ur other stuff tho. One bad page doesn’t make you a bad author (believe me, my page was also shit the last time I wrote for a con.) Don’t think of this as a personal insult. Monster did vouch for you so I’m sure ur cool. This just isn’t for me man, sorry.
I found this contest really hard to write for, I tried to follow the parameters as much as possible and I felt like more liberty could have given. Thanks for the feedback, please feel free to read my other stuff!
No problem. And yeah I get it. I mostly blame the failures of this article on the con itself and the restrictions it upheld as opposed to your writing style. Like I could tell you tried and whatnot, and I commend your efforts. This just didn’t work for me.
I have to agree with many of your sentiments of about classicon, but I didn't say anything mainly because I thought people would think I was ranting.
The contest is not the problem.
Lack of inspiration is the problem.
I promised not to enter this contest. (I didn't.) But, I did develop an idea for an entry entitled "Tunnel of Love," inspired by the Tunnels of Love in vintage theme parks.
"Romance" is sorely lacking in the Backrooms.

I love this level. It really does feel like a level that woulda been written back in the early days. You've made the most of what you had to work with and it makes for a really interesting level. This is definitely one of my favourite articles in the con.
