Pretty nifty.
<insert president here>’s America smh.
Jokes aside, this is pretty good. I wouldn’t headcanon this as how I think the backrooms were created, but it’s interesting.
I usually don't expect much from "the government is behind it" trope, but this is very well written. I will keep an eye out for more of your work
OMG SO THE GOV ACCIDENTALLY CREATED THE BACKROOMS BUT IT HAD UNFORSEEN CIRCUMSTANCES AND CAUSED PEOPLE TO COME IN YES TAKE MY UPVOTE I WOULD GIVE THREE IF I COULD
I never really read this all the way through, and I'm glad I did.
Having the Backrooms being created by the government is a nifty idea (general opinion), and the execution was very nice. I also like the inclusion of Gorbachev and the Soviet Union, as it makes me think of the Cold War and all of the fear produced around it. Really gives me some tense vibes just thinking about the situation back then.
Overall, very meh idea (my opinion) with great execution. +1

This article has the certain advantage of being the first one I read for the con, so I had a bit of time for it to ruminate in my head. This was an instant upvote for me when I went back and realized that the line:
we discovered a disoriented, black-haired man, likely in his mid-twenties, wandering around the office area of the Gaia System. Agents detained him and asked how he discovered this area, but the man provided no answers. He only said that he “fell through the ground” while jogging and identified himself as Dr. Michael Dawson while in federal custody. He is currently receiving medical treatment for inexplicable amnesia and injuries consistent with claw marks.
Had been sitting in my head without me even knowing it was from this article, it's just such a perfect and genuinely creepy image. I just love everything about this article, it takes a trope one could consider cliche or overused and just plays it perfectly straight and does it really well. The "what if?" of this article is obvious and in your face, and it feels like the entire article was actually built for this contest, unlike some other entries.
There is nothing this article does wrong, except for the banner with the stretched out american flag that looks absolutely ridiculous, please fix that it sucks so bad.
Anyways, enthusiastic upvote and this will always be the winner of the contest in my heart.
Edit: +1
