I like the whole idea, though I would have suggested that a part of anyone who is entering the sublevel remains down there. It would have worked as a parallel as to how childhood traumas remains a part of us, in my opinion. Maybe that's too much?
It would have also worked a level reachable through any body of cold waters, but it's fine as it is.
I very much enjoyed the fact that the sublevel is anchored in local folklore, it made the whole thing feel more real.
