The Crit Crew

The Crit Crew is our Discord-based critique team, created with the two main goals in mind.

  • Cultivating a healthy and efficient critique environment for our authors, both new and old.
  • Help hone the skills of new Critics and Greenlighter Trainees.

To join, ask a Mod or Greenlighter for the "Critic" role on Discord. Then you simply need to create a critic profile on the Meet-the-Critics channel. For those looking for Wikidot-based critique, feel free to reach out to those critics who accept Wikidot PMs.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding The Crit Crew, please contact a Mod or Greenlighter via Discord or Wikidot PM.

Team Structure & Responsibilities

Greenlighters — "Crit Captains"

This position is available for any Greenlighter willing to join the team. They will be responsible, to some degree, for the following:1

General mentoring of Critics and Greenlighter Trainees

  • Assist new critics and GLT's in improving their critique skills.
  • When necessary, teach them how to handle the different situations that arise from giving critique2.

Help perform monthly evaluations.

  • Each Crit Captain will be responsible for at least one critic of their choice. If someone would like, they can assist with multiple.
  • These will act as a more thorough checkup on how the Critic is doing, where they can improve, and what they've been doing well.
  • This could also serve as a good time for the Critic to bring up any concerns, questions, or suggestions if they have any.

Follow up on drafts that have been deemed worthy of a greenlight, or at least close to it, by the Critics and GLT. This allows us to not only gauge their judgment of drafts but also gives us an opportunity to be proactive with quality drafts.

Greenlighter Trainees

Help organize Critics.

  • If you see a draft thread that is having a hard time getting attention, bring it up in the critic channel and see if anyone is available to take it.
  • If a critic ping has been left unresponded to (after a reasonable time), bring it to the critic channel and re-ping people again.

Sandbox Forum Channel

  • Assist in checking the sandbox channel for any requests for help that may not have pinged or otherwise have been missed.

Do some crits — That's the name of the game.

Critics

Critics are expected to do any of the following, to whatever degree they are willing and able to:3

  • Respond to Critic pings;
  • Critique drafts;
  • Assist in the sandbox channel;
  • Translation critique;
  • Idea critique.

Critic Channel thread – Each Critic will have a thread on the critic channel where they will need to post links to their critiques. Just a link will suffice; this is to assist with evaluations and gauging activity.

Communication – With any team, this is the most important aspect. We need to communicate not only between ourselves but also with the community. This means actively updating your Crit Crew profile to state your availability, estimated response time, and, when necessary, whatever queue system you have for yourself.

While we understand everyone has lives and situations happen where you may not be available certain weeks, we would like to see at least two critiques per week, or at the very least some level of involvement in the team. Anyone deemed inactive for a period of 2 weeks will be removed from the roster, though they may rejoin when they have more availability.4

Auxiliary Crew

Discord Staff

Help monitor activity of critics and assist in communication.

Retired Greenlighters

Our honorary greenlighter team members can, and are encouraged to, assist the team in whichever way they are available to.

Point Board / Star Critic / Team Promo

Each month the Crit Crew will collectively choose one of the monthly promos. There will also be a "Star Critic" chosen each month using a point-based system. During the month and evaluations, Crit Captains will record points given for individual actions or behavior that are good examples of what we want to accomplish as a team. At the end of the month we will add up the points, and whoever did the best job that month gets a front-page "Critic Spotlight" feature of an article of their choice and the golden Star Critic role for the following month.

Ping Response .5 points
Draft Crit 1 point
Translation Crit 1.5 points
Good Team work / communication .5 points
Idea Crit 1 point
Exceptional Crit .5 points
