Back in the early days of the internet, file size was a problem. When Dial-up internet was commonplace, and computers had hard drives of less than a gigabyte, you had to be diligent with compression. Even a few megabytes of image file could take minutes to load.
On the other hand, for advertising purposes you needed to grab people's attention. The best way to do so was with moving images, but animated G.I.F. files weren't very compressed. As such, in order to make them load so an internet browser on the super-information highway would see them, people would have to make them smaller.
Eventually, people settled on a specific G.I.F. size of 81 pixels in width, and 31 pixels in height.
After a while, this style fell out of fashion due to increasing storage and transfer capabilities. But they still feel nostalgic to many, so they are a perfect fit for creating art for such a nostalgia-based project as The Backrooms.
While all of these widgets are 81/31, they have been scaled to 162/62 so you can enjoy the lovely pixels (also because small scales make it look weird in some browsers). Despite my efforts, the images still suck in some respects, there is small amounts of glitching and such. Sowwy >_<.
Not all of these buttons are animated, which is sort of in line with how they were back in the day; not everything needed to be moving.
I have also linked all of these images to the pages they are based on (where possible).
All art here is made by yours truly, PrismaticMoosePrismaticMoose. Enjoy ^w^.
