Spooky Contest 2021

Spooky Contest 2021

The concept of Halloween has existed for hundreds of years as a night to mark the end of the harvest season and the beginning of a cold winter. Often times, this night has been looked at as a night where our world and the world of the spirits are closely intertwined; a night where anything can happen.

This is a vibe that a lot of people really enjoy, so, in honor of the spooky month, we're excited to announce Spooky Contest 2021!

The Contest

The idea of this contest is for writers to create articles that take inspiration from the concepts commonly associated with Halloween. Whether you interpret this as taking inspiration from fall vibes, old horror movies, or something else entirely is up to you! Your articles don't need to be scary either as long as they line up with the themes of Halloween.

  • Stick to the theme of the contest. It's okay to play a little loose with the theme (we encourage you to be creative), but don't submit articles that completely ignore the theme.
  • You may submit as many articles as you would like, but only the highest rated article will be counted as one of the winners.
  • The score of each article will be based purely on their rating at the end of the voting period.
  • No major edits will be allowed once a work is posted. However, minor edits such as fixing a typo or grammatical error are fine.
  • Contest entries will not require greenlights to be posted. This is mostly due to the fact that the greenlight team is very overloaded, and in some cases there just might not be enough time. It is still highly encouraged to get critique, though.
  • Any attempts to give yourself an unfair advantage will result in disqualification. What counts as this will be decided by staff on a case by case basis. If you aren't sure if something counts as this, please ask staff.
  • All entries must be posted during the "Posting Period". Any articles posted before or after this period will not count as entries in the contest.
  • Collaborative works are allowed; if a collaborative work wins, the collaboratives will pick the feature together.
  • This is a writing contest, so theme pages and hubs (with the exception of GOIs) cannot be submitted.
  • Please tag your entries with "spookycon2021". All articles tagged as such will automatically show up on this page.
  • The top 4 winners will each get to pick an article in the December feature cycle. A fifth feature may be added if there is a tie.

  • October 4th-October 30th — The Writing Period: During this time, no articles may be posted, but you should work on writing and perfecting your articles.
  • October 31st-November 13th — The Posting Period: During this time, all articles submitted for the contest will be posted. You may still work on writing during this period.
  • November 13th-November 30th — The Voting Period: During this time, no more articles may be posted. This period exists so that articles that are added later can still rack up points.

One Final Word of Advice

Remember that this contest is just for fun. Some people felt that the atmosphere of our last contest got a little too competitive; it's okay to be a little competitive, but don't let it get to the point where it lessens your or someone else's enjoyment of the contest.

Additionally, a theme has been provided that you can use for your articles! It's completely optional.

All pages tagged with "spookycon2021" will be automatically displayed here in random order when the posting period begins.
