Level 626 is the 627th level of the Backrooms and an in-progress database of the Eternal Repository.
Description: The Island
Level 626 is an island with a vast arctic tundra environment approximately covering an area of 1,832.7 km2. Prevalent snowfall usually covers the entire island for most of the year. The perimeter of the island is entirely surrounded by 50-meter-tall black walls of an unknown material. Its thickness is roughly 10 meters, and, as of the current date, nothing can chip or break through the material. However, there is a smooth and large perforation in the southeastern end of the walls, which seems to be the mark of a large digging tool or mechanism's successful attempt to penetrate the material.1 The opening itself slides down to the shores of the island, in which a silent black sea awaits those who gaze upon it.
In the middle of the island is a hexagonal tower resembling a lighthouse by design, measuring approximately 70 meters in height and about 15 meters in diameter, where all materials of the tower resemble that of the exterior walls. Atop the tower is a gray mechanical eye, almost always facing the southeast region of the island, which coincides with the direction of the smooth opening. The mechanical eye is surrounded by four black metal rings, presumably of the same make as the walls. These rings unite and align into one circle at times when the eye seems to be focusing on a specific spot. Throughout the Eternal Repository's time in Level 626, this has only happened once and was aimed outside the walls. The eye floats and levitates through an unknown process, though chains and wires can be seen attached to the outermost ring,2 which can adjust to any position seamlessly.3 This mechanical eye operates daily and emits a visible gray light that reaches far and wide, usually aiming for the black sea beyond the walls, and specifically the southeastern aperture. When physical matter comes into contact with the gray light in question, it immediately goes through the process of de-atomization,4 and five personnel have unfortunately gone through this painful effect. Though, weirdly enough, the environment and the walls don't seem to be affected by the de-atomizing light of the mechanical eye.
The inner structure of the tower, which is segmented and separated by five layers, is entirely hollow, excluding the fifth layer. Pairs of stairs naturally lead into each layer, adhering and making contact with the tower's hexagonal sides smoothly,5 but as previously stated, these layers are wholly empty. The fifth and final layer contains cogwheels, gears, and machines to automatically power the mechanical eye on top of the tower. The source of power, or even energy that is required to power such a device, has yet to be discovered and is still a mystery for Gamma Division personnel. An inscription is written above all mechanical wheels, scribbled in faded gray ink: "Here the Father Eye gazes".
The "Father Eye", as it is called, can store physical information of an unknown amount by feeding the machine information. This process can be done by shredding physical documents into the left-most mechanism of the machine, which stores the information within the Father Eye. This information will then be archived within the Father Eye and its machinery, which can be accessed by using a typewriter device at the far right end of the machine which prints information of whatever document one has submitted to the machine. Feeding the Father Eye seems to make it more "active" throughout the day; for example, having more cycles gazing in a different direction.
The Eternal Repository has now renovated the tower into a database of their own making, dubbed Database 626-Ψ by Division Gamma Head Director "Cherub". Database 626-Ψ now stores information regarding the level and its properties, as well as documentation of other levels and databases within the Eternal Repository. They have also established several tents and structures outside the database, making Level 626 an official dominion of the Eternal Repository, with the approval of the Master Administrator himself.
To this day, the Eternal Repository has full control over Level 626 and will deny any GOI entry to the database unless permitted to by the Master Administrator or Head Director "Cherub". If a person must seek information regarding a certain topic, one must have direct permission from either of the individuals stated above.
Description: The Sea
Outside of the main island6 is a boundless and seemingly infinite black sea, expanding into the horizon. The mechanical eye seems to be always targeting something in the waters, and it is theorized that the Father Eye is protecting the island from threats that the people may not see, or perhaps that it is looking for something. Exploration has been attempted, but only injuries and fatalities have been reported per each attempt.
By order of the Head Director, no expeditions are to be initiated outside of Level 626's walls.
The seawater itself is completely black in color, yet it still retains the normal properties and taste of salt water, which makes it a viable source of water when purified. This black color also does not fade, even when the water is filtered, and black steam is seen instead when it is boiled. This color also stains clothing and can be removed by using water that is not from Level 626's sea. These stains are so dark in color that one might mistake them for ink or dried blood, but it is simply the unnatural nature of the black sea.
Mixing regular water with the black sea's water simply makes more black water. Somehow, the color of Level 626's seawater can spread through any liquid it touches or mixes with, including substances such as oil, glue, and other liquid chemicals. Blood, water, and urine can even become black in color when a person drinks or even touches the water, yet despite these ominous-sounding effects, nothing happens to one's body, and everything is still normal as it should be. One will only have black blood, urine, tears, sweat, and other bodily fluids. This transition of liquid color within one's body could last from a month to half a year. In a way, this black water substance is chemically invasive to any liquid.7
It is worthy of note that if one does not want these sudden anomalous changes in one's body, it is preferable not to drink, or even touch, the water from Level 626's sea.
Description: The History
The history of the level is all but unknown. There are uncanny details left within the level and its extremities, such as the precise and smooth hole in the southeastern wall, the boundless black sea, and the Father Eye and its vague, unknown purpose of gazing into the sea. Many questions are left unanswered throughout the level, though it has transitioned into a habitable environment for the Eternal Repository to settle in.
The level is left in a way that makes it seem like someone, some people, or some things may have lived in Level 626 before it was left empty and abandoned. Perhaps they were hiding from something and created the Father Eye as a watchtower against the unknown threats of the infinite black sea just outside their walls.
The vague signs, clues, and hints make it impossible for the Eternal Repository to create proper documentation of the level's history, as there is nothing on the island but its natural geography and structures. There is also barely any information regarding the black sea. The realm Level 626 is situated in shows no signs of abnormality or glitches, making the level an unsolvable mystery with vague clues and theories to support it. Level 626 may remain as just a mystery turned database of the Repository.
Entities
The Eternal Repository unofficially recognizes the Father Eye as an entity. However, it does not seem to exhibit any sentience or consciousness and is more akin to an object than an entity. It does not have any other details worthy of noting, excluding those which we have already stated above. Other than this, no entities are known to exist within Level 626.
Bases, Outposts, and Communities
Database 626-Ψ
Database 626-Ψ is the only community within Level 626, governed and protected by the Eternal Repository. Personnel working in Database 626-Ψ are dedicated to storing and providing information to anyone who might need it. They are protected by a group of Sentinels stationed for when occasional trouble from other groups of interest arises, making Level 626 and its database one of a few permanent settlements of the Repository. Their population is rising at a steady pace after information about the level was publicized, with 539 personnel currently.
Entrances and Exits
Entrances
Most entrances into Level 626 are kept as a tight secret, but there are some which are publicly announced and known. These publicly known entry points are some of the main entrances that the Eternal Repository uses, with some measure of security protecting them regularly.
There are rumors about Database 11-Θ having a secret entrance directly into the tower and that the Master Administrator uses this entrance himself, but these are mostly unsubstantiated theories.
Levels with any source of water within them may occasionally have black-colored water spots on the surface that you can jump into, causing you to end up on the shores of Level 626. Entering this way will not initiate the black water's effect on the body.
Levels with frequent blizzards and snow storms can lead you to Level 626's fields inside the walls. However, these entrances are riskier and more unlikely to initiate due to the unpredictable and dangerous nature of such events.
The method of no-clipping in certain levels within the 600–700 range may occasionally lead you to the outside of Level 626's walls, though this has yet to be fully confirmed by our testers and explorers as it is an unsafe task and thus remains to be a rumor.
Exits
There are only two ways to leave the level: the first is completely submerging yourself within the black sea for ten seconds, and the second is writing your full name on a piece of paper, then feeding it into the machine of the mechanical eye. The former will make you drift into a deep sleep, dreaming of standing on the black sea as you look at a gray light from above. The latter will result in the machine "uttering" your full name and then causing you to pass out on the spot, and you will likely dream of seeing someone standing in the sea from a high point of view.
