Level 173 is the 174th level of the Backrooms. This level resembles a large, vast & hollow cavernous area that is half-submerged in water.
Description:
Level 173 is a large flooded cave. The entirety of Level 173 is made of concrete, and this level's lighting creates a low yellow glow in each room, making it slightly difficult to see. Each section of Level 173 is different, usually requiring the wanderer to jump or climb over large stones or structures to progress.
The layout of each section in this level has been inconsistent with each wanderer, and the shape of the level can even change to completely stop the wanderer from exiting, in ways such as creating dead-ends and steep slopes that lead directly into the water, among other things. Throughout random intervals, an earthquake will occur, usually resulting in the danger of falling stones coming from the ceiling and walls of the level.
The water in Level 173 can vary between each section, as it has demonstrated changing to types such as seawater, freshwater, and even Almond Water. The waters in Level 173 have also proven to be very dangerous, as many unearthly fish have been seen. If a wanderer happens to fall into the water, it is recommended to find land immediately as the fish in the waters are hostile. The water's depth has also been known to change within each section, from only being 3ft deep to approximately 60ft deep, the sections with deeper water usually have more hostile entities.
Level 173 also has an overabundance of waterfalls, some of these are hiding entrances to other levels, or small ponds of Almond Water which can be used as an Almond Water refuelling station. Although, some waterfalls have proven to be dangerous, as sometimes they will lead to large pits.
Entities that can appear in Level 173 are Deathmoths, Clumps, Hounds, Nguithr'xurh, and Crawlers. Additionally, The Disease has been reported spreading within this level.
There are also many messages engraved within the walls and floor of this level, all of which appear to be in English. These messages can disappear and reappear in different sections of Level 173, which usually say the following:
"DON'T TRUST THE WATER"
"THE QUAKING HURTS"
"DO NOT WAKE, OR THE GROUND WILL QUAKE"
"BEAST OF THE DEPTHS QUAKING"
"LEVIATHAN"
"SOON BE WAKING"
"BE QUIET"
Edit (5/12/21): Recently, wanderers have reported that the earthquakes that occur within Level 173 are getting stronger, so strong that they have caused entire sections of Level 173 to collapse. During these earthquakes, a siren-like sound has also been heard emanating from the waters. There have also been sightings of new inscriptions on the walls and floor of the level.

Entrances
- Entering a wooded area in Level 172 during a Black Dawn Event will lead you to this level.
- Waterfalls in Level 8 can lead to this level.
- Clipping through a wall in Level 3 has a slight chance of entering this level.
- Venturing into one of the waterfalls of Level 300 brings you to a long cave that leads to this level.
Exits
- Reaching the end of this level will lead to Level 174.
- Entering waterfalls can lead to Level 66, Level 76, Level 140, Level 2, Level 6, Level 994, and Level 998.
- Some deep pits behind waterfalls can lead to Level 666, Level 899, Level 532, and Level 6.
- Finding the secret exit will lead you to Level 601.
