Description: One of the oldest problems humanity has had to deal with is how to respectfully deal with the dead. The Backrooms pose an interesting challenge to this problem. Many of the levels of the Backrooms do not have areas where the dead can easily be buried or cremated. Most of the time people in the Backrooms leave the dead where they fell or hide them away. When possible, those trapped in the Backrooms try to take the dead and dying to the Gravelands.
The Gravelands is a mostly flat plain broken up by forests, steams, and settlements surrounded by large graveyards. These graveyards maintained by an organization known as the Order of the Shroud. Members of the Order are constantly at work tending to their gardens, planting crops, building and repairing structures, preparing new gravesites, and protecting the settlement from hostile entities.
The fields surrounding the settlement are excellent for farming and the streams are full of fish, which makes the Gravelands suitable for long term habitation. Members of the Order of the Shroud are willing to trade with outsiders and maintain diplomatic relationships with both the MEG and BNTG.
Entities known to exist here include deathmoths, curabitur birds, and facelings. The biggest threats are creatures known as grave robbers, ugly humanoid creatures that dig up graves and eat human remains. These entities have been known to attack lone humans and small groups of travelers. Travelers occasionally report seeing creatures that resemble huge goldfish floating high in the sky. Since these entities have never come close to ground level it is unknown if they pose any danger to humans.
Colonies and Outposts
Order of the Shroud
This organization has dedicated itself to the respectful treatment of the dead. They believe everyone deserves a proper burial and maintain the vast graveyards on this level. Other groups will bring their deceased here whenever possible for burial or cremation. The Order also maintains a hospice for those who are suffering from terminal illnesses.
The Order of the Shroud is friendly with outsiders but does not allow travelers to stay in their settlements indefinitely. The Order has been known to give travelers food and shelter for short periods of time in exchange for physical labor or assistance dealing with hostile entities.
Entrances and Exits
Entrances
You can reach the Gravelands by noclipping through walls on levels 0, 1, and 2 that are marked by a winged skull. There are also places on other levels that you can noclip through to reach the Gravelands on other levels. The Order and MEG mark these locations whenever possible.
Exits
Exits from the Gravelands always take the form of openings in large trees or the side of the occasional hill located on this level. These exits can go to any level of the Backrooms. Whenever possible the MEG and the Order mark which level the exit leads to.
