Level 14 - "The Military Hospital"
rating: +113+x

Two travelers walk slowly through Level 170, each wearing a red backpack. They scan the horizon looking for concrete blocks.

"Hey Arno, can I have one of those… I'm blanking on the name, but you know what I mean."

"Yeah, of course, just let me…"

He kneels on the ground and unzips his backpack.

"Yeah… That's strange."

"What?"

"I can't find them in my backpack."

"That's okay; we'll just grab some when we get back to Level 11."

"No but— I know I packed them, I— Hah, I guess it's contagious. I can't remember what they're called either… I don't even remember what they were..."

The monorail pulls into Level 11's Yellow Station. A short and balding man with a worker's uniform and a clipboard walks up to the front of the train car. He waves to the conductor.

"Heeyy! I'm just here to make sure that this week's Firesalt shipment arrived safely."

The conductor gets out of the train-car. He runs his fingers through his shortly cropped hair. Perspiration can be seen on his forehead.

"Well… That's what I wanted to talk to you about."

"Oh?"

"There is no Firesalt shipment this week. We—"

"What do you mean, there's no shipment? Did something happen?"

"I just don't know… We… The Firesalt is usually waiting for us at Michael Station in Nine, but it wasn't there…"

He pauses for a moment to gather his thoughts.

"We asked the locals, but no one could quite remember where the Firesalt even came from. The weirdest thing is that I know I was told at some point where it was. Hell, I knew in detail where it was, but now, everything's foggy".

Tom flips the sign to "Closed". It's been a busy day, and he's finally ready to go into the back room and get some shut-eye.

He counts today's haul. Most of the usual stuff people trade for food here. Some Firesalt, a couple Scarabacks, some Memory Juice, and…

Are those coins? Coins with an insignia he doesn't recognize. Where could the coins have come from? Who could have made them? He can't think of any groups offhand who would have the metalworking prowess to manufacture something like this, and yet here they are. Surely he would have remembered someone trading something so out of place, but nothing comes to mind.

Oh well, he thinks, the Backrooms are just a strange place. He drops the coins back into his bag, wondering if they'll even still be there in the morning.

Two men stand in front of a lake, staring out over the water.

The first one begins to speak.

"Have you ever wondered why it's like this?"

"Not really, the Backrooms are a strange place. A lake of Cashew Water is one of the most normal things I've seen today."

"It didn't use to be Cashew Water."

"It didn't?"

"This place used to be a paradise. The lake used to be one of our best sources of Almond Water."

"What changed?"

"That's what I can't quite figure out. The file lists a group called "The Almondneers", but it seems like they've been completely wiped off the Earth— or, the Backrooms."

"People go missing all the time; it's not too abnormal."

"They didn't just go missing though, no one remembers them. Some people who used to pass through this level a lot, they remember the name "The Almondneers" but ask them any details, and their mind goes blank."

"Why are you telling me all this?"

"Because I'm scared, Solo. What if it happens to me?"

The two travelers with red backpacks continue to travel through Level 170. They're a little hungrier than before but much closer to their destination.

"Look! I think that's them, the Type 3 Blocks."

"Sure enough!"

They both take a seat inside one of the blocks.

"I honestly don't feel that different."

"Just give it some time."

Some time passes

"Hey Theo, do you remember Level 14?"

"God, I wish I could forget it."

"No, not… that Level 14. I mean… the hospital."

"I don't understand."

"I… It's hard to explain, but I remember that Level 14 used to be different. I almost feel like there was some sort of mental barrier stopping me from accessing it, but now I can remember."

He pauses for a moment.

"Theo, do you remember Hugo?"

Subject: Inconsistency in the Database

We've found something very strange regarding the database. One of the tech personnel at Base Alpha has found a way to revert parts of the database to an earlier state at a localized level. The strange thing is, this reverted version doesn't match what we have right now. Most of it is the same, but some of the levels it lists are completely different than what we have on record. And, not just that, but completely different from what I remember. Take a look at this screenshot:

Any state from before January 27th, 2021 lists Level 14 as "The Military Hospital", but I know for a fact that we have had Level 14 in our database as "The Bloodstained Forest" (or "Paradise" as some infected terminals list it) for much longer than 5 months, and everything else we have backs that up. I don't know what this means, but it could be that these reverted states are tapping into an alternate version of our universe, and if that's the case, then this is huge. I'll update you with any more findings.

Level 14

SURVIVAL DIFFICULTY:

Class 3

  • {$one}
  • {$two}
  • {$three}

Level 14 is the 15th Level of The Backrooms. It was discovered on July 23rd, 2019, by u/hugorrr.

Description:

Level 14 resembles a derelict, long-abandoned military hospital. The blue, tiled walls of its unending rooms are covered in dirt and reek of blood and vomit. The wood ceiling is rotten and even caves in at some places, but no escape can be found through that avenue. Much of the floor is wet, even flooding some rooms, and an unending emergency alarm can be heard loudly blaring at all times. Occasionally, cabinets with syringes and first-aid kits can be found. It is not recommended you use these first-aid kits, as they have exhibited unusual results. Many sections of the walls in Level 14 are covered with graffiti. Most of this graffiti is either indecipherable or completely nonsensical and is believed to be a natural feature of the Level rather than anything left by wanderers.

The only entities on the Level are a series of ghost-like figures who resemble patients and hospital staff. Many of these exhibit extreme deformities in ways that cannot exist naturally in humans. Though these figures occasionally seem to be aware of the presence of wanderers, there is no way to interact with them, as any attempts will cause you to simply phase through them.

Communities and Outposts:

The Hospital Society:

Due to the difficulty in exiting the Level, the Hospital Society was founded by u/hugorrr to help wanderers find their way out. The Society currently has 12 members who all entered the Backrooms between 1940 and 2006. They also often gather medical supplies and give them to passing wanderers.

Entrances and Exits:

Entrances:

The only known entrance to Level 14 is through a staircase that occasionally appears in Level -2.

Exits:

Level 14 can only be exited by walking through the rooms in a very specific pattern. This leads to Level -2. Because of the difficulty in getting this pattern correct by chance, it's recommended that any Wanderers who are stuck in the Level seek the help of the Hospital Society.

Dream Journal

1.27.2021

I had a dream last night where there were two figures in a void. One with a blue aura and one with an orange aura. They were silent for a while until the blue one finally spoke up:

"The grace period for Level 14 has ended. Can I get a witness for deletion?"

To which the orange figure replied,

"Witness this dick."

Then they laughed as if sharing a joke, and everything went dark.

"Hugo, come look at this."

"Huh?"

"The exit isn't working."

"What do you mean the exit isn't working?"

"Maddy, walk through that door again."

"Sure…"

"See. Nothing."

"Well, that… that's very bad."

"What is it?"

"Well shit, I guess we need to find a new exit."

Hi,

I'm not quite sure who at Base Alpha gets these emails, but I'm just writing this to let you know that the Exit to Level 14 has changed. We recently had a Wanderer enter the Level, but when we tried to lead her out using the usual method, we found that it simply didn't work. This is very worrying because that was our only known way to Exit, and finding it was a complete fluke. Anyway, I don't think there's anything that can be done from the outside, but I would like you to send a message to people to avoid staircases in Level -2 for the time being because, as of right now, Level 14 is a dead end.

We will be searching for a new Exit and hope to find another way out soon. They say when God closes a door, he opens a window, and I very sincerely hope that's true.

Hugo R., Hospital Society

"How did we even find the old exit in the first place?"

"I don't even remember. I know I found it, but I…" He pauses, "I'm not even sure how I could have found such a specific path and then remembered it well enough to repeat it. Why did I even come back to try it again?"

"The Backrooms are a weird place."

"Don't I know it."

Well, I would have appreciated a response to the last email, but I'm assuming you got it from the fact that no new Wanderers have entered the Level in the past week. So, thank you for spreading the word. There aren't really any updates aside from that. We've been searching as much as we can for an entrance, but we haven't found any. I'm still hopeful.

I would also like to ask that you drop some food off through the Level -2 Entrance, as our stores are getting a little low, and this week's shipment never came.

Hugo R., Hospital Society

"It's so fucking loud. I can't take it anymore."

He sighs, "You'll get used to it."

"I don't want to get used to it. I'm hungry, and I'm cold, and I can't even sleep with that fucking alarm in my ears at all times."

"We'll find another way out soon."

"God… I sure hope so."

I would really appreciate it if someone responded to these emails. As I mentioned in the last one, our food stores are really running low, and what's worse, I think one of our members seems to be sick, so throw in some medical supplies, real medical supplies (and yes, I see the irony of someone getting sick in a hospital). I've been in this level for one and a half years now, so I'm used to it, but the new Wanderer who came in right before the Exit stopped working, she's not doing very well. The conditions of this Level are not easy to live in.

Please, please, send something. We're going to starve if it goes on much longer.

Hugo R., Hospital Society

"Did you get a response yet?"

"Nope." He sighs, "It seems like they've forgotten about us."

"Well, I guess all we can do is keep trying. Our only other option is to go full Donner Party." She laughs dryly.

"Too real."

It has been over a month since I first emailed you. We're out of food. We're sick. We're cold. We're going to die down here. At this point, I'm starting to doubt that these emails have ever been reaching anyone, but please, if anyone is reading this, we need help.

Hugo R., Hospital Society

"Do you think we're going to make it out?" Her stomach growls.

"I don't know. I just don't know anymore." He closes his eyes.

"We have to keep looking for an exit. It's all we can do."

"Just… I need to rest for just a little bit…" His eyes are still closed, and they will never be opened again.
